Dear Blue, How do I keep up with the right marketing trends?

Pantless and confused, AZ

Dear PAC,

First, please grab some sweats and a t-shirt. We don’t care if they’re joggers or straight leg. Really.

We often hear this question, and our answer is always the same: Find the pants—and marketing—that feels great and fits your budget.

Like any well-curated wardrobe, start with marketing basics to get your desired results. Then, add a trendy tactic or two to freshen things up and add interest. That simple white t-shirt is a classic staple, but those trendy ripped jeans will come and go. Marketing is no different.

And, just like fashion, choosing which marketing platforms takes a lot of trying things on for size. When bringing customers through your front door, your go-to basics should include a healthy mix of digital and traditional strategies. Direct mail is a tried-and-true method for lead generation, as is email marketing. Social media came along 20ish years ago, and what was considered a trend has become a must-have for most businesses to engage with their customers. Now it’s video in all forms.

Let’s examine three “hot right now” marketing trends and consider how they can complement your content strategy.

Trend #1

Text messaging has evolved from a simple communication tool to a powerful marketing channel. With open rates commonly above 90%, text messaging offers unparalleled reach and immediacy. We’ve all received them—whether it’s a coupon to save 20%, a barb-filled political push, or a research survey request—text messaging is a top trend in marketing.

If you keep your messages short and effective, text messaging is a smart marketing platform. Depending on your list size, you can use text to deliver personalized “thank you for your business” messages, promotions, and service alerts directly to your customers’ phones for as little as $20-$50 a month.

Trend #2

Email marketing is evolving to stay relevant in a crowded inbox. The latest trends include interactive emails, AI-driven personalization, and segmented automation. By leveraging these trends, businesses can create more engaging and relevant email campaigns that resonate with subscribers and drive higher conversion rates.

Not quite ready to embrace AI in your email marketing? Like a quality pair of Levis, the basics still get you far. Even at their core, well-crafted email campaigns are still one of the most powerful ways to get your customer’s attention. The key to success is having an email strategy that includes knowing exactly who your target audience is, what they need to hear (which is not necessarily what you want to say), and a strong call to action.

Trend #3

Short video is one of the most popular forms of content on the web. We have TikTok to thank for this one. With its entertaining and snackable format, short videos such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts combine music, voice audio, AR (augmented reality) effects, and text-on-screen to create engaging content.  This format allows businesses to showcase their personality, provide insider “behind the scenes” snapshots, and genuinely engage with their audience. Short videos shouldn’t be overproduced by nature, making it a great option for marketers with only smartphones and short stints of time.

This is but a small sampling of current marketing trends garnering buzz in the industry. It’s tempting to want to be part of the in-crowd. We get it. We’re here to remind you that not everyone rocked those 80s hair band crop tops or turned heads (in the right way) with the 90s grunge look, so don’t feel pressured to show up in a way that doesn’t flatter your business.

Stay focused on the basics. Once dialed in, venture out and try a new jean style, experiment with a short Reel, or explore an AI platform. Have some fun!

And remember: not everything has to be around forever—unless it’s on the internet and involves you not wearing pants. We’ve got experts on staff for that.
